Special Events - Jewish Education Connection

Experiential Learning enhances the learning process at the Jewish Education Connection. Through the acquisition of skills, knowledge and experience and reflecting on all, Judaism comes alive in a meaningful and relevant way. Events, scheduled throughout the school year, involve the whole family and are open to our community members. Hands-on activities inform learning and are a great tool for building a community that values learners of all ages, genders, interests and abilities.

Opening and Closing Day Barbecues:
We begin and end the school year with a JEC family barbeque hosted by the Men’s Club
Selichot:
The Sunday before the High Holidays, JEC families gather for a service introducing the major themes of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.

Sukkah Hop: JEC students travel to visit the many different variations of the Sukkah during the festival of Sukkot.

Israeli Food Festival: This annual event gives the JEC family an “inside” look into Israeli culture through food. Families have an opportunity to sample a wide range of Israeli food, as they practice conversational Hebrew and learn the Hebrew words for this delicious cuisine.

Hanukkah: JEC families participate in a myriad of Hanukkah-related fun activities.

Tu B’Shevat Seder: In the Spring, students celebrate the birthday of trees with this festive meal, featuring seasonal foods. This holiday recognizes the beauty and wonderment of nature, and through the recitation of this unique Seder, JEC students reach a greater understanding of Judaism’s concern and respect for the environment.

Purim Shpiel: JEC students and parents volunteer to participate in a musical parody of the famed Book of Esther in celebration of Purim. This play is performed for the entire JEC community.

Purim Carnival: Games, prizes, and wonderful food mark this celebration of Purim for JEC families.

Passover Model Seder: In preparation for the holiday of Passover, the JEC community celebrates with a “hands on” experience, reviewing the basics of a Passover Seder. It is complete with songs and, of course, traditional, festive foods.

Grade Shabbats: Each grade of the JEC prepares a Friday Night Service, gathers for dinner, and leads the congregation in prayer.

Whole School Shabbats: The JEC community participates in a Shabbat meal and service, led by JEC students from all grades.

Lag B’Omer Picnic: Celebrating this traditional day to recognize education, JEC families picnic and play games.

Confirmation Exercises: Our oldest students, 10th graders, receive their certificates for accomplishing three years of training beyond their B’nai-Mitzvah.

PACT Programs: Parent and Teacher Together: Each individual class participates, with parents, in a special “themed” Sunday that emphasizes an aspect of Jewish belief through creative learning and art. Themes including bullying, Shabbat, Havdalah, and Bar/Bat Mitzvah are introduced.
